Even moving slowly and in low quality, this game has very impressive graphics. I’ve watched some friends play several other NCSoft titles like Guildwars and the first Lineage game, and the graphical quality of this companies games is excellent, especially because most of their games you don’t pay much or anything at all for.
Interface is pretty good, but can be a bit confusing at first. Once a tool, weapon, or ability is equipped, you can easily cycle through them at the bottom of the screen. As for ammunition for your weapons, everything I’ve seen so far (about half an hour into the beta, only a hand gun, rifle, and shotgun) uses the same ammunition.
But let’s go back to the beginning.
The opening cut scene when you open the game for the first time, is both foreboding and stunning. On low graphics, the quality will shock and amaze you. The log in screen is boring, especially when you wait to connect to the server. When you first get started, you’ll see a walkie-talkie above the head of the guy you have to talk to (at least it’s not the cliche exclamation or question mark). After you get a feel for what does what, you get a pair of gloves, that act as a bit of armor. They have a pretty nice effect for starting equipment. Now, what you get when you start is 5 health kits, 10 armor color bottles, a gun and 1000 rounds of regular ammunition. After you get the gloves, you’ll get a rifle when you do your next objective, which is an example of what you’ll be doing a lot, which is bombing stuff. You bomb a dropship, then you have to kill five enemies. Not too difficult, but their health recharges faster than yours so it can get frustrating. The manual auto-lock (redundant much?) system is really confusing to get used to, but you figure it out after awhile. After you kill those enemies, you move foreward and get a rifle and some extra ammo. After that, you do more and more. All in all, the game controls, looks, and feels like a great game. You can play it on just about any computer from the last couple of years, so you probably won’t have to upgrade to play. Now, you can even work this game with inferior parts (for instance, the minimum requirements for the game is the ATI Radeon 9600 or nVidia GeForce FX5700, but I’m using an FX5200). It is Vista compatible, and for optimal performance, you don’t need much (just 2GB ram, 16bit soundcard, a GeForce 7800 or Raedon x1800, and a pentium 4), so if your PC is from 2004 like mine, all you need is a new grapics card to be running optimal speed. What I recommend, is you get the Beta for this game now. It’ll only cost you five bucks, go to Gamestop, reserve it. Not only does it have some perks for when the game goes out of beta (like a free non-combat pet) but it also has some really cool arts, which I guarantee anyone will love. It’s also the only way to get 2 emotes, and well, I’ve said enough.
Go join the beta. If you have an NCSoft master account (because you play City of Heroes/Villians, Guild Wars, Lineage, etc)
you can use that as your login info for the game. This games got some unique features too, for instance, if you get tired of what you’ve done in your class, wanna try something new, you can clone your character. It has the same last name, but the first name, body, gender, and everything can be different.
In two or three weeks, I’ll have a deeper look into the beta (when I get my new video card x.x) and a few weeks after that I’ll have an official review. Thanks for reading!
